CHARACTER
Name: Mahiru Koizumi
Canon: Super Dangan Ronpa 2
Age: Real: 19, Apparent: 17
Timeline: Post-game
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality: Depending on who you are, Mahiru Koizumi seems to be either nothing but some bossy nagging woman or an optimistic and sensible friend. Both are equally as true. Koizumi is always one who hopes for the best, even in dire situations, yet can still face them with a sense of realism. To her friends, and guys she's close with and trusts (or a combination of the two), she can be sweet and caring. To the rest of the guys, she's bossy and annoying, and caring in a bit of a motherly way (so pretty much bossy and annoying).

This is definitely reflected in how she refers to the guys and girls. To girls, she refers to them by first name and "-chan", indicating a very close bond of friendship and social intimacy, even if she doesn't know them too well (which is especially seen by how fast she does this when she goes to Jabberwock Island with the rest of the SDR2 kids). To guys however, it's just their last name without honorifics. This can be seen as rude, and although Koizumi doesn't use it in a rude way, it's used intentionally to signify her feelings towards them.

It's not that all men are bad, or even pigs. Koizumi just sees them as lazy and unreliable. After all, having grown up in a home where she had to take care of her good-for-nothing lazy father, Koizumi doesn't want her peers to turn into a copy of that, so she yells at them to be on-time and reliable and clean up after themselves and to be nice to girls and treat them well. This tough exterior starts to break down the closer she gets to a guy, however. She offers to wash Hinata's clothes and take care of him during her Free Time Events, and not even during the final ones but as early as the second one. Considering how she insists on this multiple times as well, her views on gender roles aren't as clear-cut as they seem to be, and almost traditional in a way (men work and protect the women, and women help to take care of the guys).

This, combined with her bluntness for people and the views that she carries, makes her a bit confrontational. At one point before the second trial, Hinata describes Koizumi as someone who's "always straightforward". Koizumi doesn't beat around the bush and is stubborn about her views and how she thinks. It's not without cause, however, as she earnestly believes in what she says and wants to make people happy and set things right. At the end of Chapter Two, she wanted to talk with Hiyoko Saionji, Ibuki Mioda, Mikan Tsumiki, and Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu to set things straight and right with the mystery surrounding the Twilight Syndrome game. Her insistence of talking things out with Kuzuryuu and abhorring his revenge and judging of other people's sins helps set her moral compass and gives greater context for the rest of her actions.

That doesn't make her susceptible to doing bad things or being influenced to doing something bad, however. In between her time of joining Hope's Peak and the events of Super Dangan Ronpa 2, she was part of a group known as SHSL Despair, led by Junko Enoshima. While there's nothing outright stating why she joined, there are implications here and there that can lead to conclusions. During her time at Hope's Peak, she was bullied relentlessly by Kuzuryuu's younger sister, to the point where Satou, in anger, killed her to end Koizumi's torment, and was killed herself by Kuzuryuu later on after Koizumi took pictures of the evidence and helped Satou by cleaning it up. While this isn't THE cause of her descending into despair, events like this certainly helped speed her into that state.

Even then, Koizumi is able to be talked into doing things with just the right push. Nagito Komaeda, someone she dislikes and distrusts, managed to talk her into playing the Twilight Syndrome game even when he was tied up and unable to do anything. Even though she had intended to do it from the start, with just the right push and encouragement from Komaeda, she found herself playing into Monokuma's motive.

Koizumi also feels that she really, really wants to feel useful and help people. Her self-esteem issues with her insecurity over her talent and feeling like she's in her mother's shadow ends up making her want to contribute and feel useful. This has helped before, like in the first chapter's investigation phase where she helps Hinata figure out who could have murdered Byakuya Togami using her photographs and skills in plotting out a floor plan. However, that kind of need to want to belong and help can easily be twisted into something dangerous as well, especially if you're someone looking to bring people into your group to spread despair.

Above all though, she wants to make people smile. While she takes a variety of photos, her main focus is on people smiling, and it was her biggest goal on Jabberwock Island to get photos of everyone smiling, even the elusive Peko Pekoyama. Though she believes that her talent isn't as great as everyone else's, she puts it to great use to try and bring them happiness even in despairing times. That doesn't mean she'll take shallow praise for her work though; stuff like "amazing" or "cool" is cheap to her, and doesn't tell her anything about her work and is superficial.

A telling thing about her is how she doesn't want pictures taken of her, unless it's by someone she absolutely trusts (like Hinata in her final Free Time Event). She feels as if she doesn't need to be the focus of the subjects, and prefers to be the one taking pictures of everyone else. While she wants to set herself apart from her mother in terms of talent, she feels that with her work as a photographer and desire to be a photojournalist, she'll be able to not only get to that point, but find a way to use her talent to make those around her smile.

Background: Koizumi grew up with her mom, who is a professional wartime photographer, and her dad, who's not described as much other than lazy and good-for-nothing, and someone Koizumi at young ages had to clean up after and take care of while her mom went out and traveled to take photographs. When Koizumi's mom came home, she'd only show her the pictures of people smiling, which is what inspired Koizumi to take pictures of people smiling. However, she feels as if she's in her mom's shadow due to her talent and fame, and wants to stand apart in some way with her photography skills.

Prior to the Mutual Killing on Jabberwock Island, she formed a very close bond with four other girls; Ibuki Mioda, Mikan Tsumiki, Hiyoko Saionji, and a girl only known as "Satou". She also was a part of the photography club, which included Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu's younger sister, who relentlessly bullied her. The bullying got to the point where Satou confronted Kuzuryuu's sister and killed her. Koizumi later helped cover it up by taking pictures of evidence of Satou killing her, as well as cleaning it up. At some point in her time in Hope's Peak, she joined SHSL Despair under the influence of Junko Enoshima.

A truncated and somewhat lacking summary can be found on the Dangan Ronpa Wiki!

Abilities: Koizumi is the Super High School Level Photographer, so her skills and knowledge about photography is some of the most skilled and tightly-honed. In addition to this, as shown by Chapter 1's investigation phase, she is proficient at sketching out basic floor plans for an area.

First Person: January Test Drive post

Third Person: While everyone was working on building what Usami needed them to get, Koizumi had a special goal: to take a picture of everyone smiling. So far, she had managed to take many of her classmates' photos. Most were easy to get. Hanamura and Souda loved smiling and showing off to impress the chicks (she gave the both of them a good verbal lashing), Nidai and Owari were big balls of energy, and when Hinata wasn't being Hinata the Unreliable, he could lower his worries in front of the lens.

Sonia was always pleased to pose elegantly for the camera and talk with Koizumi (even if she did tire of how she was told how much better of a leader she could be over Togami), and all she had to do with Saionji was hang out around her. Surprisingly, Koizumi was actually found tolerable by her. Mioda never ran out of smiles and cheerfulness, and even seemed to love the camera. Even Tanaka was easy to take a picture of; all she had to do was ask about his animals (although his look was more of a hearty boasting and booming maniacal laugh... but it counted). As for Komaeda, though off-putting, he seemed generally alright to take a picture of (though the hope talk was very weird).

Some of the others were a bit harder to get. Tsumiki freaked out and worried more than was possibly healthy, but with a bit of talking about medicine (and some calming down about how this was an okay topic of conversation and no, you're not selfish Mikan-chan, don't worry), she could fish a smile out from her. As for Nanami, the girl never looked more natural and in-the-zone than playing video games. Even if Koizumi wasn't so good at them, she managed to give her a bit more energy and a flashing smile. She wasn't quite so sure of Togami, but persistence paid off as Togami generously allowed her to take a photograph of his gracious presence (she couldn't have rolled her eyes harder).

In the end, there were just two left: Kuzuryuu and Pekoyama. Not once since she got to Jabberwock Island did she see either of them smile. It was probably impossible. That wouldn't stop her from trying.

She did notice that Pekoyama hung around the ranch a bit more often than not. Koizumi figured that she wanted to see the animals, but they always ran away in fright. So she came up with a plan. On a holiday Usami gave them, she managed to convince Tanaka (a feat in of itself) to help her find a rabbit for Pekoyama. Even if it ran away, hopefully it'd be long enough for Pekoyama to smile. But... it'd be nice if the rabbit grew to love her too, right? After a bit of searching and help, she went over to Pekoyama near the end of the day.

"Hey, Peko-chan! Look what Tanaka and I managed to find for you." She held out the rabbit for Pekoyama to take, and although the rabbit was shaking a bit in fear, it seemed that Pekoyama couldn't be happier. Snap went the camera, and Koizumi felt proud. Then there was just Kuzuryuu left.

It was hard to even talk to Kuzuryuu; whenever she tried, he'd get mad at her, they'd argue, and both left feeling like nothing was accomplished. Until the next holiday, Koizumi pondered and thought over it, but couldn't think of anything. She just couldn't reach out to him and connect. Even if she could, that jerk would probably refuse anyway.

It was nearing the 50th day of their time spent at Jabberwock Island when she heard a knock on the door. That's odd... she wanted to rest in for the day and she didn't recall setting anything up. Maybe it was Saionji. To her surprise, when she opened the door, it was Kuzuryuu.

"What do you want, Kuzuryuu? If you're going to be rude and argue with me, then I don't want to bother. I don't want to deal with boys who do nothing but-!" As she spoke, Kuzuryuu interrupted her and said something she didn't think he'd come around to saying, much to her surprise.

"You've been taking pictures of everyone here, right? I'll let you take a picture of me... but don't you fucking show anyone, alright!? Hurry up and take it." Koizumi saw him attempt to smile. It was a sly, cocky one, but a smile nonetheless.

She took her camera and snapped. 15 different memories to last for when they left the island.
